Rally vows to make Kangpokpi 'drugs free'
Source: Chronicle News Service

Kangpokpi, May 19 2022: Following the firm resolution taken for curbing the alarming drug menace in Kangpokpi town, a massive rally against drugs was taken out at the district headquarters on Thursday pledging to make it a 'drugs free' .

The rally was organised jointly by Kangpokpi Town Committee, Kangpokpi Women Welfare Organization, and Kangpokpi Youth Union in collaboration with the One Stop Centre Kangpokpi and Childline 1098 Kangpokpi to create public awareness on the growing menace of drug abuse, especially among the youth in the town, and also to give a clear mes sage to all the denizens of the town that there will be no more tolerance on any illegal drugs trafficking in the town.

It is worth recalling that on April 23, people of Kangpokpi, in a public meeting, resolved to deterge the town completely from drugs and unanimously declared a War on Drugs' while reaffirming to strictly prohibit use, sale, and supply of drugs in the town.

The meeting also unanimously entrusted Kangpokpi Town Committee, Kangpokpi Women Welfare Organization, and Kangpokpi Youth Union with the full authority of dealing with all illegal/contraband drug cases as deemed fit.

The anti drug rally, which witnessed a massive turnout, had the participants raising anti-drug slogans, and carrying placard.

The rallyists marched towards the SP Kangpokpi's office from Nute Kailhang via National Highway 2 passing through the main town.

Speaking to the media, KWWO president Hekim Hangshing said that use, sale, and supply of drugs in the town is fast becoming prevalent, especially among the youth, and it has destroyed scores of families in the town.

She continued that involvement and support of parents, guardians, and other caregivers are critical in preventing the youth from substance abuse while urging society and parents to keep a close watch on their wards.

Exhorting the mothers of the town, Hekim Hangshing further said, "this is my message to all the mothers of the town, we can either lay down and die with our children or we can stand up and fight".

Kangpokpi Youth Union president Haolet Khongsai urged the people of Kangpokpi to take care of their children and not to let them fall into the web of drugs menace.

The special team of KYU had begun conducting sting operations against drug peddlers hanging around the town and none will be spared if caught, irrespective of their backgrounds.

Apart from its negative social effects, substance abuse is associated with other criminal behaviours such as gang formation, robbery, and other social disturbances, he said and called upon the people to extend cooperation to the civil bodies in the fight to root out drug menace so that the society could be given a safe and drug-free atmosphere.

KTC chairman Angam Leivon said that eradicating the alarming practice of drug abuse through a single rally or campaign may not be possible.

However, as responsible leaders, who care about the next generation, we have initiated the campaign to create a public platform to address the pressing issue of drug abuse and also to prevent the youth from falling in the trap of drugs abuse and to channel their energy in a positive manner.
