Imphal, June 14 2013 :
All Manipur United Clubs Organization (AMUCO) and United Committee Manipur (UCM) have jointly appealed to the people to join the observance of 12th Great June Uprising and Unity Day on June 18 to pay homage to the martyrs who have laid down their lives for the cause of safeguarding the territorial integrity of the State.
A statement of the Observation Committee said that Manipur was once a prominent independent state in Southeast Asia with rich culture and tradition.
However, the people of the State had been subjugated by the British after the defeat in Anglo-Manipuri War of 1891 and later merged into the Indian Union on October 15, 1949 .
The Indian government has been applying the "divide and rule policy" of the erstwhile British Empire even today thereby infusing hatred among different communities of the State.
The event of June 18, 2001 is the testimony of people's love and concern for their motherland.
The people of Manipur rose against the Bangkok Agreement signed between NSCN-IM and Indian government which allowed the extension of cease-fire without territorial limits on June 14, 2001.18 martyrs sacrificed their lives for the cause of protecting the territorial integrity of the State.
The statement further mentioned that the joint observation of Great June Uprising and Unity Day has reaffirmed the unity and strength of the Manipuris.
People should join the observation by paying floral tributes to the martyrs.
The Committee also slammed the Indian government for deploying several divisive tactics in the name of South Nagaland, Greater Nagalim, Supra State, Alternative Arrangement and others to mar peace and harmony of the State.
