Fashion Extravaganza heightens hope for State

Expressing hope that Manipur would be listed among the fashion capitals in the coming years, nationally known fashion designer Robert Naorem has observed that state's rich culture and fabric can give a different identity to the people of the state.
The noted fashion designer from Manipur who organized his dream event of Manipur Fashion Extravaganza, Autumn/Winter 2nd edition at Ist Manipur Rifles Ground here extended his utmost gratitude to the people who supported him in making the big event happen in the state.
Speaking at the opening session, Robert said that Manipur being a land rich in culture and tradition stands out in the entire North East and is well known throughout the country for its rich handloom and fabrics.
"There is a certain uniqueness in the Manipur culture and designs made up by different communities and tribes rendering different colours which needs to be showcased and made known to the world", he said.
He also mentioned that the fashion event is one of the second kind being set up and believes that fashion industry in Manipur would be able to explore new heights through such ventures.
The opening session was graced by Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam as chief guest while Govindas Konthoujam, Minister of Commerce and Industries and I.Hemochandra, Minister of PHED as president and guest of honour respectively.
Gaikhangam said that fashion industry needs to prosper in a state like Manipur where culture and creativity already exists and added that platforms such as the fashion extravaganza will act as a ladder to step up to a different level.
The state is rich in culture which includes dress, sculpture, songs, fabrics which are made colourful by the different communities existing in the state.
As such, fashion can play a pivotal role in redefining the identity of the small state.
He also expressed the need to move forward along with the trend of time and leave behind the past conservative societal outlook for enhancing development and economic prosperity.
The state's richness in culture and tradition is a hidden treasure which needs to be revealed and challenged to the world.
Giving the presidential speech, Govindas Konthoujam maintained that organising of such events will enhance export business of the state as well as the country at large and it will help a great deal in improving economy of the nation as fashion is a big industry.
The Manipur handloom and handicraft products are well known throughout the country and are also ordered for purchase not only by states like Delhi and Mumbai but also by the Middle East countries, he noted.
Minister Hemochandra stated that the fashionevent will make an impact on a larger scale as every hard work leads to success just like Robert Naorem's struggling journey to make his niche in the fashion industry in a small state like Manipur.
Fashion parades and entertainment programmes remained the attraction of the second and main session.
Around 9 local designers showcased their creation along with Robert Naorem's dresses, which was worn by both national and local models who walked down the ramp with poise.
Some models and representatives from Bhutan also participated in the fashion event.
