Tension prevails in NIT Langol; reporters' camera snatched

Palpable tension gripped National Institute of Technology, Imphal on Friday after non-local inmates of the hostel and local students engaged in a squabble over the issue of the quality of food provided by the institute's mess department.
Meanwhile, media persons who rushed to the institute to cover the development had to face the ire of the one of the institute's officials.
The latter tried snatching the camera of one of the media persons.
Sources informed that some non-local students threw back their leftovers in the common food container when they found that the quality of food the food offered was below the expected standard.
Some local students intervened and asked them not to behave in such manners and this led to some kind of misunderstanding between the two groups of students.
They also alleged that the non-local students harassed the mess staff.
A sit-in protest was also staged on Friday at the NIT gate after the authorities failed to look into the matter despite repeated complaints over the bahaviour of non-local students.
Students who were protesting at the NIT gate said that around 225 students studied at the NIT in various departments.
Out of the total students, half are locals while the other half was the non-locals.
Meanwhile, mess manager of the Institute, Maibam Rajesh, assistant Lourembam Sanjit and head cook Bitu Paul said that it is impossible to provide the choice of each student's favourite food as the students hailed from different States.
