AR seizes betel nuts and illegal timber

Troops of Shangshak battalion under the aegis of HQ IGAR(South) in an operation seized 240 bags of illegal betel nuts from a truck plying between Ashang Khullen and Bunpun villages of Kamjong district on February 2.The truck driver was identified as Thotreichan Shinglai of Yaripok who was ferrying the contraband with an assessed market value of Rs 57 lakh, said a statement issued by PRO Assam Rifles.
The driver along with the vehicle and recovered contraband was handed over to Customs Department at Imphal for further investigation.
In another instance, troops of Shangshak battalion intercepted another truck ferrying illegal timber near Ashang Khullen village of Kamjong district today, added the statement.
On inspection by the troops, the truck driven by Md Aziz, a resident of Yairipok, was found to be carrying 23 logs of smuggled Ucham and Khangra wood estimated to be 450 cubic feet which are worth Rs 1.44 crore in the market, added the statement.
The seized contraband and timber along with the drivers and vehicles were handed over to Customs Department and Kasom Khullen Police station respectively for further investigation, added the statement.
