Poppy plants destroyed

In continuation of the ongoing drive against cultiavtion of poppy plants in the State, a joint team of district police, NAB, NCB, Assam Rifles under the supervision of District Magistrate and SP, Churachandpur, destroyed poppy plantations covering an area of around 130 acres at G Monglian, Salvaphai and Khomunnuom areas, under Sangaikot Division, today.
A press release issued by DC Churachandpur, Shyam Lal Poonia stated that poppy worth around Rs 5.23 corer, were destroyed by burning during the drive, which began from 9 am and lasted till 4 in the evening, in the presence of two Executive Magistrates.
Speaking to a team of media persons, the DC informed the plans of district administration to provide an alternative means of livelihood to the villagers and warned that the village chiefs would be held responsible for any illicit cultivation of poppy under their jurisdictions.
SP, Churachandpur informed that an awareness week on ill effects of opium/poppy would be held soon and warned that strict actions would be taken against the individual financing opium plantation/ cultivators.
He urged the public to extend full cooperation towards the district administration's goal of achieving a district free of any illicit poppy plantation.
