Imphal, June 30 2013:
MLA of Keishamthong Assembly Constituency Laishom Ibomcha has pointed out that Imphal Municipal Council (IMC) must generate sufficient revenue first to make its functioning effective.
He was speaking as Chief Guest of the inaugural function of a market shed at Keishamthong Hodam Leikrak here today.
The market shed has been constructed under the supervision of Councillor of Ward No.11 Ph Memchatombi with funding from Planning and Development Authority (PDA), Manipur.
MLA Ibomcha further stated that the IMC would not be able to function properly if it is short of revenue.
It can start licensing of fish and meat markets, he noted.
He also appealed to the IMC authorities to keep Imphal City neat and clean.
Speaking on the occasion Director of Department of Municipal Administration, Housing & Urban Development (MAHUD) N Geetkumar said that offices of Ward Development Committees cannot be opened up, but the IMC is managing to run the offices on monthly rent of Rs.3000 each.
Moreover, the Council is facing problems in keeping Imphal City neat and clean.
The work of cleaning up garbages is likely to be handed over to a private firm in 2021, he added.
The inaugural function was also attended by Chairperson of IMC A Nimai, Vice-Chairperson Thambaljao Phaomei, Councillor Memchatombi, Chairman of PDA S Sunderlal and Executive Officer of IMC W Rajen.
