Gurus, teachers of Nat-Sankirtana honoured

Imphal, August 26 2014:
Gurus and teachers who took active roles in showcasing and representing the rich cultural heritage of Manipur to the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), which has subsequently recognised Nat-Sankirtana performing art form of Manipur as a world heritage, were honored for their relentless contribution during a simple ceremony held at Bijoy Govinda Temple here today.

Speaking as the chief guest during the function, Manipur chief minister O.Ibobi maintained that Manipur is one among the privileged states which has been identified and acknowledged by the international organization, UNESCO for its rich cultural heritage.
Further, he said that there are many more culturally rich nations which need recognition and approval.
"As such, people should co operate and support each other to bring up these nations to the level where they can be known for their rich cultures and traditions.
Only then can the people live with oneness and harmony", the chief minister added.
It may be mentioned that during the UNESCO Convention held in 2003, a constitution was adopted which enclosed Article 40.The proposal for recognition of the world heritage of Manipur to the world through Article 40 was submitted in 2009 after which the state came to be well known throughout the world for its rich culture and tradition.
As part of the occasion, various programmes depicting the state's rich cultural heritage was also showcased.
