Imphal, July 23 2010:
The United Committee Manipur (UCM) has alleged that JCB and bulldozer operators deployed along certain section of the Imphal-Jiribam route have been minting money by indulging in tugging and pushing of stuck vehicles rather than concentrate on the task assigned to them.
Speaking to newspersons at its Lamphel office today, UCM secretary (Organisation) JK Mangang maintained that as man and machinery pressed into service by the Government for expeditious development of the National highway are not dispensing their charges there is no sign of improvement in condition of the lifeline.
Taking serious note of JCB and bulldozer operators charging money for their service in towing away vehicles from slushy spots along the highway, the UCM functionary expressed strong resentment that transporting of boulders/stones at the behest of NGOs to make the route fit for transportation of goods and passengers remains unfulfilled.
Contending that cost of towing away a vehicle by the heavy machines of the PWD varies from Rs 200 and over, JK Mangang desired that the Government stopped such activities and issue strong instructions to PWD officials as well as contractors to concentrate on proper development and maintenance of the highway.
Strongly demanding that the State Government accord top priority in the development of the Highway, he also conveyed UCM's plan to hold dialogues with leaders of villages settled in between Nungba and Phaitol to facilitate trouble free movement of passengers and goods carriers.
Meanwhile, information has been received that Peace Keeping Volunteers of UCM have pulled up driver of a Tata Winger (MN04A/4703) for plying along NH-39 inspite of the public stand that Imphal-Dimapur sector of the Highway should be abandoned.
The driver namely Takhellambam Sanayaima of Yairipok bazar was spotted plying on the same route in defiance of the public decision and had confessed through newspapers (July 19) to not ply on the said Highway.
in good faith and after owners of Tata Wingers assured to skip Imphal-Dimapur route in future, Sanayaima was handed over to the owner concerned.
