Imphal, June 22 2012:
The Human Rights Law Network (HRLN), Manipur would be organizing a day-long workshop on reproductive and health rights at the Conference Hall of Institute of Cooperative Management, Lamphelpat here tomorrow.
Issuing a statement in this connection Meihoubam Rakesh, Director of HRLN Manipur, pointed out that despite financial and managerial inputs through NRHM, the health system in certain states continues to deny basic care for those who are most dependent on government services.
In Manipur the accessibility, availability and quality of maternal health care resources, in accordance with the standards set under the Indian Public Health Standards, are not being provided.
Disparities are evident between the urban/rural allocation of resources, the varying degrees of accessibility, quality and availability of emergency obstetric services; and family planning and access to safe abortion for women from different socio-economic, marginalized and vulnerable backgrounds.
The workshop is being organized to find out the areas in which effective legal intervention could be made, with a hope that litigation in the area of maternal health and reproductive rights would be an effective avenue through which accountability and redress for violations of constitutional and international human rights law of victims and the wider community can be sought, the statement added.
