MU hosts national meet of Sedimentologists

A 3-day long national conference on Sedimentation and Tectonics with special reference to energy resources of North-East India and 30th Convention of Indian Association of Sedimentologists has kicked off today at seminar hall, Department of Earth Sciences, Manipur University (MU) here.
The programme is being hosted by Department of Earth Sciences, MU under the aegis of Indian Association of Sedimentologists, Department of Geology.
Professor Soibam Ibotombi, head of department Earth Science told at the inaugural function of the conference that all living organisms on earth have been formed from sedimentary rocks.
These rocks produce natural resources like underground water, coal, oil, gas, geothermal energy and other construction and infrastructural development materials which are assets in our livelihood.
The professor also said that more than 80% of geographical area in the North-East India is covered by thick piles of sedimentary rocks, mainly of tertiary age and recent alluviams of the mighty Brahmaputra and other major rivers of the region.
The North-East region is endowed with vast natural resources having different geographical and tectonic settings.
Inspite of its rich geographical origin, this region remain as one of the least explored basins of the country, he maintained which is very disheartening.
Inorder for its treasure to be discovered and made known to the world, this specific conference has been organized, he added.
Member of Parliament, T.Meinya Singh and president of Indian Association of Sedimentologists, Professor G..NNayak attended the inaugural function as the respective chief guest and president.
