Imphal, June 27 2022:
Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) acting chairperson advocate Khaidem Mani has encouraged the people of the state to feel free to approach the commission if they have any grievances regarding rights violation.
Speaking during the 24th foundation day celebration of MHRC held at the conference hall of Manipur State Legal Services Authority, Lamphelpat Court Complex here on Monday, Khaidem Mani explained that the Commission is a court for the poor people, who could not afford to hire an advocate.
Unfortunately, people of the state lack the habit of approaching the commission for rights violation cases, he said, while urging the public to cultivate the habit and avail benefit of the legal services being offered by the commission, which will recommend possible solutions to the government or authority concerned.
Mani also said that the commission has so far processed around 700 cases.
Human Rights Alert Manipur director Babloo Loitongbam, social activist Potsangbam Sonamani, representatives of different CSOs and several human rights activists also participated the programme.
Babloo Loitongbam presented a brief account on the functioning of the commission since its inception in 1998 and said that the commission was born out of necessity following the gross violation of basic human rights and threat to lives of the common people, human rights defenders, Meira Paibi and youth in the name of counter insurgency, which was prevalent in the 90s.Remarks of the United Nations made at different global forums regarding excesses committed by state and central paramilitary forces also played a role in bringing the commission.
He welcomed the commission's decision to submit its annual report to the government and commended the commission for the services it is providing to the people of the state and for protecting their rights.
