State tops NE in fake news cases

With 14 police cases against spreading fake news on social media, Manipur has the highest number of cases registered in connection with social media and fake news among the north east states in 2020 .
As per a recent report published by National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB), while Manipur recorded 14 cases related with spreading fake news on social media, Meghalaya recorded nine while Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim had no such cases.
Manipur also recorded one case of cyber blackmailing or threatening, Assam and Meghalaya two cases each while the remaining NE states did have any.
As per the report, Manipur witnessed highest number of cybercrimes in 2020 in the last three years with 2018 recording 29 cases, 2019 four and 2020 recording 79 cases.
In terms of cybercrimes, Assam and Meghalaya top the NE states.
In 2020, 3530 cybercrime cases were recorded in Assam, 142 in Meghalaya, 79 in Manipur, 34 in Tripura, 30 in Arunachal Pradesh, 13 in Mizoram and 8 in Nagaland while Sikkim recorded none.
Three cases of releasing electronic materials which could harm the prestige of minors were recorded in Manipur, 259 in Assam, one each in Arunachal Pradesh & Mizoram, and seven each in Meghalaya & Tripura while Nagaland and Sikkim did not record any such cases in 2020 .
Manipur also recorded one case of data theft, three cases of sharing materials that could harm modesty of women on social media, and two cases of forgery in 2020 .
Out of the 79 cases of cybercrimes, two were committed out of anger, 40 were frauds and three were committed with the intent to harm prestige.
Out of the total cases, 10 were related with sexual exploitations and 10 have political motives, the report said.
