Forest Dept to use drones to monitor wildlife

As part of measures to protect and increase the population of wildlife in the state in addition to keeping a close watch on poachers, the Forest Department will be using drones to monitor the movement of wildlife especially at key feeding areas.
On Sunday, Environment and Climate Change minister Thongam Biswajit attended a meeting to discuss the issue of declining wildlife population, with local clubs in Bishnupur district headquarters.
The meeting was also attended by PCCF Aditya Joshi, DFO Bishnupur, officials of Forest Department, and representatives of Bishnupur Social Welfare Club, Social Development Institute, pradhans, Rural Development Association and Youth Development Committee.
During the meeting, discussions were held on the stations of forest guards, conduct of social awareness programmes, monitoring of wildlife feeding areas and conducting raids to stop poachers from laying traps, using weapons and license guns to hunt wildlife.
On the other hand, a Sangai deer which had ventured into a nearby village after the Phumdi in Keibul Lamjao became flooded, was safely rescued by the locals and later, released in Keibul Lamjao after contacting the officials of Forest Department, a report conveyed.
