16th annual conference of NE Diabetes Society underway

The 16th Annual Conference of the North Eastern Diabetes Society organized by the North Eastern Diabetes Society, Manipur State Branch commenced here at the Jubilee Hall of RIMS today.
The inauguration function was graced by the Governor of Manipur, Gurbachan Jagat as the Chief Guest and Dr S Ibomcha, Director Health, government of Manipur, Prof Th Biren, President, NEDS, Manipur State Branch, Prof Th Premchand, Organizing Chairman and Dr Ksh Achouba, Organizing Secretary were the Guests of Honour of the function.
Speaking on the occasion, Governor Gurbachan Jagat said that the present conference is the third of its kind in Imphal.
The main objective of the conference is to seek measures to prevent Diabetes mellitus by propagating more scientific information and creating awareness regarding change of life style causing obesity and diabetes.
He further went on to say that the global burden of type 2 diabetes mellitus for 2010 would be 285 million people which is projected to increase to 438 million in 2030, a 65% increase.
As for India the increase is estimated to be at 58% from 51 million people to 87 million in 2030.The impact of type 2 diabetes mellitus may be considered as a lifelong disease.
It increases morbidity and mortality and decreases the quality of life.
At the same time the disease and its complications cause a heavy economic burden for the diabetic patients themselves, their families and society.
In order to lessen substantially personal and economic burden of the disease, the WHO collaborating for diabetes in India in Chennai is actively engaged in the primary prevention of diabetes, childhood obesity and other related disorders by promotion of health and reduction of risk factors through the individual and on a community basis, he said.
He also said that there are two approaches for the prevention of diabetes, they are the Population approach and the High Risk Approach.
He further went on to say that the conference will certainly help in finding ways and means to ameliorate the human suffering caused by diabetes with the increase of health awareness among the general public of the North Eastern States particularly those living in Manipur.
