Imphal, June 12 2013:
Referring to the 2011 Census report in which the total population of the state has been recorded as 29,21,756, Loumee Shinmee Apunba Lup (LOUSAL), Manipur pointed out that annual requirement of rice in the state would come to 6 lakh tonne.
However, due to export of rice from the State to other states, local rice are not available in the market anymore and the people are purchasing the imported and inferior quality of rice at higher price, according to a statement issued by LOUSAL.
Urging the state government to implement Food Marketing Act in Manipur, the Lup has also appealed to purchase locally produced rice from the farmers and to ensure availability of the same to the people at subsidized rate to all.
