World population Day observed

State Health Society, National Health Mission and Directorate of Family Welfare Services Manipur organised State level World Population Day at Directorate of Family Welfare Services BT Road Imphal today.
A mass rally was also flagged off from Directorate of Family Welfare Services by State Mission Director NHM and Director Family Services.
Speaking as chief guest of the event, Director, Family Welfare Services Dr K Rajo conveyed that the observation of World Population Day was taken up by National Development Programme since 1989 .
Dr K Rajo stated that the rapid rise in number of birth rate and insufficient land or areas has led to population explosion problems.
Pointing out that the present population of the world and India is 7.6 billion and 135 crore respectively, Dr Rajo stated that such population boom has resulted to insufficient food, house, resources etc.
In view of these consequences, the day is observed across the globe to stabilize population growth, he added.
The objective of World Population Day is to raise awareness among the youths, educate the public, protect girl child, prevent STDs and early pregnancy.
He stressed on the importance to spread awareness on the consequences of early pregnancy while stating that around 800 women across the world die during child birth, in a year.
Today's event focused on how to keep the mother and the baby in a healthy state.
He informed that the programme was launched in 1953 in India while the National Family Planning Policy was formed in 2000 .
The National Family Planning Policy aim to improve maternity child health as well as bring a stable population within 2045.In case of Manipur, the birth rate is 12.9 while the death rate is 4.5.Population growth has increased with the improvement in medical science and technology, he said and appealed to the parents to plan their children according to their capacity.
State Mission Director NHM Manipur N Bandana Devi and Additional Director Health Services Manipur Dr H Ranjit attended the programme as president and guest of honour respectively.
