Imphal, January 09 2022:
Manipur People's Democratic Front (MPDF) secretary Sapam Samungou has urged the government to convene an all-party meeting at the earliest to unitedly face the petition filed in the Supreme Court of India by West Bengal-based political outfit Amra Bangali challenging implementation of ILP system in state.
Addressing a press meet at Manipur Press Club here on Sunday, Sapam Samungou said that Amra Bangali has challenged implementation of ILP in the state by filing a petition in the Supreme Court invoking Article 14 (Equality before the law), Article 15 (Prohibition of discrimination on ground of religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth), Article 19 (Protection of certain rights regarding of speech, etc.) and Article 21 (Protection of life and personal liberty).
The state cabinet has also resolved to face the petition without backing down, he added.
Samungou continued that the government must hold an all-political party meeting to discuss the issue and ways to defeat the petition legally.
Though notification has been issued for the state assembly election, but still there is need to face the problem unitedly.
If the political parties in the state continue to only focus on election, then there may be a negative judgment by the SC which will hurt the sentiments of the people, he opined.
