The Ningol Chakkouba Festive Fair which is jointly organized by the District Industries Centre, Imphal West and Kabrabam Handloom Cluster, Thangmeiband commenced here at the Gandhi Memorial Hall, Imphal today.
Speaking as the Chief Guest at the inaugural function of the festive fair which will continue till October 11 , O Nabakishwar, Principal Secretary, Commerce and Industries, Manipur said that in order to enable the women weavers to apply for loans from any nationalised Banks of the country, the Finance Ministry of the Government of India has decided to introduce the Handloom Weaver's Credit Card in the country very soon.
As soon as the credit card facility is introduced in India it will also come into force in the state as well.
He said that Handloom is the only sector which can provide employment opportunities to a number of people and also increase the GDP of the state, next only to agriculture sector.
He further went on to say that if the handloom products produced by the women weavers of the state are only sold in the small market of the state it will be impossible to improve the economic condition of the women weavers thereby failing to develop the economy of the state.
We should increase the quality of our products, put on more extra efforts on its design and export it not only in other states of the country but also to other parts of the world.
If the handloom products are exported outside the country the demand for our products will automatically increase.
With the increase in demand the price of the products will also gradually increase, he said.
To create more new designs, the state government is investing Rs 2 lakhs on yearly basis by employing designers.
Designers from outside the state should also be employed.
There are also plans to establish another 100 work sheds in the state.
The function was presided by V Taulthang, Director of Commerce and Industries.
T Rajen, General Manager, DIC, Imphal West and M Rajen, OSD (Handloom) were the Guest of Honour of the function.
