Triple bandh cripples normal life in State

Imphal, July 01 2013: Three different bandhs call given by different social organizations paralysed normal life both in the hills and the valley in Manipur on Monday.

In Imphal, most of the private and Government establishments including markets were shut down due to the strikes throwing normal life and business activities out of gear.

Educational institutions also remained close.

Vehicles were seen moving thinly on the roads.

No passenger service was available for the day.

However, no unwanted incident was reported in the strikes so far.

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) seeking justice in the alleged rape of a school girl from the Muslim community of Manipur's Yairipok in Thoubal district has enforced a 48-hour statewide strike against the incident.

Another JAC against the murder of autorickshaw driver Laishram Deben, 46, who was allegedly killed by unidentified persons at Khuman Lampak Sports Complex yesterday, has imposed a 36-hour Manipur bandh along Imphal-Dimapur road from 1 am of July 1 .

At the same time, the All Naga Students' Association, Manipur (ANSAM)'s supported another 12-hour NSF bandh in the 'Naga areas' of the state since 6 am affected life in four hills districts of Tamenglong, Chandel, Senapati and Ukhrul today.

ANSAM has imposed it in support of the 12-hour strike by Naga Students' Federation (NSF) decrying the current inter-factional clashes among various Naga underground groups.

According to a statement issued by President of Tangkhul Katamnao Long (TKS) Yangmi Khapai, Ukhrul town wore a deserted look during the total bandh called by NSF in all the Naga inhabited areas.

Even the Mini Secretariat, the hub of District administration looked like an abandoned place as staff could not attend office due to TKS volunteers' strictures and spontaneous response from the public.

All shops and business establishments in Ukhrul town downed their shutters and vehicles stayed off the road.

All the inter-district transporter systems between Implhal and Ukhrul were halted totally for the day in the district headquarter in protesting the life attempt on Naga Students' Federation (NSF) assistant general secretary Kesosul Christopher Ltu on June 25 at Kohima by unidentified gunman.

The incident was unacceptable and a direct challenge to the Naga student community, the statement said, adding that the Ukhrul witnessed strong response condemning the barbarian act which was so unbecoming on the part of the national workers to shoot a student leader when the whole civil societies and Naga public are yearning for peace.

TKS also appealed to all the factions to maintain peace and shun violence and will extend fullest support towards NSF in any course of action to be taken further.

The bandh call was all successfully, peaceful and nowhere any violence occurred in Ukhrul District.

Police personnel are deployed in and around town areas and are keeping closed vigil to cope any eventualities, the statement added.
