Imphal, November 26 2014:
Protest against construction of the proposed Imphal ring road continued today too.
A public sit-in protest against the proposed construction of Imphal ring road was held today at Lanthungching Lamkhai.
Villagers of Ramgailong, Lanthungching and members of the JAC against the proposed Imphal Ring Road (Tharon-Lanthungching) participated in the sit-in.
Although construction of a ring road around Imphal is an appreciable step, displacement of economically weaker section of the society due to the development project would never be compromised, Athuan Abonmai, co-convenor of the JAC said.
He said that ten localities of the area would be affected by the ring road.
Athuan urged the authority concerned to immediately scrap the proposal in the interest of the affected public.
The JAC co-convenor also said that the Chief Minister refused an appointment with the JAC members.
The JAC would be compelled to file a case in the Court against the proposed ring road construction.
Lanthungching village headman, H Aleng said that the Govt submitted a project report to the ADB for construction of the ring road without prior and informed consent of the people and without conducting social impact assessment.
He also said that the Govt should be held responsible for any outcome if it goes ahead with the project despite the stiff opposition.
