Imphal, September 23 2021:
Strongly condemning the brutal killing of former Zeliangrong Baudi (ZB) president Athuan Abonmai after he was abducted by some gunmen from Tamenglong Football Ground right in front of many security forces, the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee has demanded a judicial enquiry into the killing.
Speaking to media persons at Congress Bhavan here today, MPCC working president K Meghachandra remarked that Athuan Abonmai was one leader who always spoke for integrity and unity among all the indigenous people of Manipur besides serving as a popular president of the Zeliangrong Baudi sometime back.
Athuan Abonmai who went to Tamenglong to attend an 'outreach programme' of Chief Minister N Biren and his Cabinet Ministers was abducted by some gunmen from near Tamenglong Football Ground.
The former ZB president was abducted in broad daylight but the security forces including Manipur Police and Assam Rifles who were present there acted as if they did not see anything, Meghachandra decried.

The Government of Manipur should reply as to why the security forces did nothing when the unidentified gunmen forcibly threw Abonmai into their vehicle, he demanded.
Soon after he was taken into the custody of the gunmen, Abonmai informed his son Arai Abonmai about what was happening to him.
Immediately, Arai Abonmai filed a report at Lamphel police station, said the Congress MLA and asked as to why the Government did not try to save Athuan Abonmai even after a report was filed with the police.
A number of people are witness to the broad daylight abduction of Athuan Abonmai where many security forces were also present, he said.
Meghachandra then questioned the State Government's oft-repeated claims of improved law and order situation.
He said that the incumbent Government has failed miserably to protect lives of citizens.
Police personnel and district administration officials who were on duty on the particular day should be penalised within 24 hours.
The DGP should also come out with a detailed report about the daring abduction and brutal killing, the MPCC working president demanded.
The State Government must also issue an order for a judicial enquiry into the brutal killing and the enquiry team should be headed by a retired Judge of High Court, he further demanded.
