Setback for Cong in 2 MCs

In the election to the eight Municipal Councils and 18 Nagar Panchayats, the results of which were declared till late evening today, the ruling Congress party suffered setbacks in two Municipal Councils.
The result is in sharp contrast to the electoral performances of the Congress in the 8th Assembly, winning the three Assembly by polls comfortably, besides exceeding the 30 members mark in the 60 members Assembly.
According to information received from the control room of State Election Commission by 8 pm today, Congress party suffered a setback in Bishnupur Municipal Council and Ningthoukhong Municipal Council.
Of the 12 seats in Bishnupur Municipal Council, Congress secured only 3 seats while Independent candidates garnered in all 8 seats leaving the remaining one seat to MPP.
In Ningthoukhong Municipal Council, which has 14 seats, Congress secured only 6 seats while the Independent candidates secured 8 seats.
In Jiribam Municipal Council, which has 10 seats, Congress and Independent shared 5 seats each.
Of the 18 seats in Nambol Municipal Council, Congress got 13 seats, MPP 2 and Independent 3 seats.
In Moirang Municipal Council, which has 12 seats, Congress secured 11 seats and Independent secured one seat.
In Kakching Municipal Council, which also have 12 seats, Congress secured 10 seats and Independents got 2 seats.
The results for Mayang Imphal Municipal Council and Thoubal Municipal Council are awaited till filing of this report.
Of the 18 Nagar Panchayats which went to the polls, results of five Nagar Panchayats have been declared.
Under Imphal West district, in Lamshang Nagar Panchayat of Imphal West which has 9 seats, Congress secured 8 seats and CPI secured one.
Of the 9 seats in Sekmai Nagar Panchayat, Congress managed to secure all the seats.
Under Imphal East district, Congress secured 5 seats, Independent 5 and CPI one in the 12-seat Andro Nagar Panchayat.
As no candidates have filed nomination from Ward no.II of the Nagar Panchayat, the seats are still lying vacant.
In Lamlai Nagar Panchayat which has 9 seats, Congress secured 4 seats, MPP one and CPI four seats.
In Lilong Nagar Panchayat of Thoubal district which has 9 seats, Congress secured 5 seats and Independent 4 seats.
