Imphal, May 03 2021:
Six student bodies AIMS, AMSU, DESAM, KSA, MSF and SUK, have stated that they will soon launch drives against price anomalies of essential items and sale of chewable and non-chewable tobacco products amidst restrictions due to COVID-19 second wave in the State.
The bodies, in a joint statement, welcomed the announcement of the 'Containment Zone' throughout the Greater Imphal area by the State Government in the wake of rising COVID-19 cases.
Although it was a good move on the part of the State Government, the uncontrolled price hike of essential items by some traders has raised eyebrows of many, the statement said while urging all concerned to intervene and ensure prices are checked and controlled.

The student bodies will also launch a drive to monitor such anomalies during such a trying time, added the statement.
Moreover, there have been instances where student bodies have pointed out irregularities in the price list of essential items issued by the State Government, it said and urged the Government to come out with a new list which will be acceptable to all.
Another big concern is extensive consumption of tobacco products which facilitates in spreading the virus, it said.
Despite prohibitory orders, the items are sold discreetly or openly and it has been a factor that has been hampering the economic growth of impoverished families.
As such, the student bodies will start keeping a watch on the sale and consumption of tobacco products.
The student bodies went on to say that Government alone cannot fight the pandemic and it should be the collective responsibility of all to respect Covid appropriate behaviour and SOP to defeat the dreaded virus.
