Picnic turns gory, three killed in Ukhrul

At least three people were killed in a clash between a group of picnickers from Sihai village in Ukhrul district and Lunghar village from the same district at Phangrei, a picnic spot, today.
Several others were critically injured.
While one of them was killed on the spot, another died at Ukhrul hospital while the third died while on the way to Imphal, said sources.
The three deceased, all from Sihai, have been identified as Lyton Khangrah (27), Luiwung Khangrah and K Pamreiyo (31). A dispute over the picnic spot between the two villages has been cited as the cause of the tragedy.
According to reports received here, villagers of Sihai village today were on a picnic at Phangrei peak.
On seeing a large number of people at the peak, villagers of Lunghar numbering around 100 armed with sticks, machetes and lethal weapons rushed to Phangrei peak and asked the picnic party whether they had obtained permission for the picnic there.
A clash soon followed between the two groups resulting in the deaths.
Many others from the same village were injured in the clash.
Phangrei Peak is said to be a 'zero point' between the two villages.
However, Lunghar villagers claim that it belongs to the them.
Meanwhile, the district police has started investigating the incident.
Speaking to The Sangai Express, the SP of Ukhrul police said that security has been intensified adding that the situation is under control.
