Imphal, August 30 2009:
Demanding withdrawal of support to Chief Minister Okram Ibobi, in the aftermath of the Khwairamband killings, a large number of women belonging to Singjamei A/C tried to storm the house of Congress MLA I Hemochandra today.
But timely arrival of police thwarted the women agitators' bid.
Earlier, Meira Paibis of Singjamei Okram Leikai, Thongam Leikai and Mayengbam Leikai staged a protest demonstration at Singjamei Okram Leikai denouncing the July 23 killings.
They protesters put up placards and festoons which read as "Resign, Chief Minister Okram Ibobi", "Punish guilty police commandos", "Punish senior police officers who tried to cover up the Khwairamband killing" etc.
After the sit-in-protest, around 300 women agitators marched to the Chingamakha Kshetri Leikai residence of MLA I Hemochandra at about 2 pm.
As the women protesters reached Singjamei Leishangthem Leikai, they were blocked by the police.
Eventually, the protesters were pushed back by police.
Though their attempt to register their protest at the MLAs' residence was thwarted, the women activists came back to Singjamei Okram Leikai and resumed their protest demonstration.
But then a police team arrived there and confiscated the placards and festoons.
Police also broke the protest demonstration and drove away the protesters.
A similar protest demonstration was also staged at Singjamei Super Market under the aegis of the Singjamei Apunba Meira Paibi Lup today before police came and broke the demonstration.
There too, police confiscated placards and festoons used by the protesters.
