A severe hailstorm which lasted nearly one hour lashed many parts of Chandel district today blowing away roofs of as many as 40 houses rendering several hundreds of people homeless and injuring some people.
A number of trees were uprooted in many parts of the district.
The damages could be extensive.
The one hour-long hailstorm which blew over 60 km p h from west to east direction, blew the CGI sheets off the roofs and carried at least 100 mts far away.
Six houses including the office of Chandel CMO were damaged.
The church quarter and approximately 15 houses of Lambung village had been partially destroyed.
Ten houses including the district library office at Panchai village had been blown away.
The roof of the house belonging to a 40 year-old widow identified as Ningkim had also been blown away.
Now the woman and her three children are homeless, eyewitnesses told this newspaper.
Seven houses of Hnaharing village and eight houses of Revarlent village had also been blown away in today's storm.
The CGI sheets of the verandah of the Maha Union Govt Higher Secondary School and the entire roof of the Oriental Academy at Maha village had been carried away by the storm.
The powerful storm caused snap of electric lines at many places.
