Imphal, August 28 2014:
With Prime Minister Narendra Modi launching the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) at the national level, Chief Minister launched the same scheme at the State level at Classic Hotel today.
Apart from the Chief Minister, Chief Secretary PC Lawmkunga, Principal Secretary (Finance) Varun Mitra and the SBI Corporate Sector General Manager were also seated on the dais as presidium members at the launching function.
Speaking at the occasion, Chief Minister O Ibobi stated that the new scheme would be quite beneficial to the people of Manipur, particularly the poor.
He hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for successfully introducing such a highly beneficial scheme.
The scheme authorizes every citizen to open accounts in any nationalised bank at just Re 1 and it has insurance cover of Rs one lakh in the event of accidents.
The new scheme is literally a health scheme for the people of Manipur and it would benefit not only the people of Imphal but also people living in rural and hill areas.
Noting that the number of banks and ATM booths are quite deficient in Manipur, Ibobi stated that this is one primary factor denying majority of the population accessibility to banks.
He also appealed to bank authorities to open more bank branches in hill districts and rural areas and assured that the State Government would provide necessary security forces and other requirements.
He further appealed to all the people to reap full benefits of the PMJDY scheme introduced by the Government of India.
The scheme was also introduced at the district level by the respective DCs.
