New Delhi, August 28:
In view of forensic evidence reportedly lending credence to allegations of rape of Th Manorama Devi, whose death allegedly in the custody of 17th Assam Rifles created a furor in Manipur, the National Commission for Women has decided to investigate the incident.
"The Commission has decided to visit Manipur and investigate the incident in view of the seriousness of the issue," NCW chairperson Poornima Advani told reporters here today.
She said the dates of the visit will be decided on Monday.
Earlier, the Commission had asked the State Government for a report on the incident and also passed a resolution condemning the incident, which was communicated to the agitating women's groups in the State, Advani said.
The visit takes cognizance of media reports about the Central Forensic Laboratory, Kolkata, having detected semen stains on 32-year-old Manorama's undergarments.
Manorama was reportedly picked up from her house at Bamon Kampu area near Imphal on July 10 night by 17th AR personnel after giving formal arrest memo and her body was found the next day at nearby Ngariyan area.
