Imphal, June 27 2011:
If all the Members of Autonomous District Councils are committed to safeguarding the integrity of Manipur, there would be no need to worry for the integrity of of the State, stated Outer Manipur Lok Sabha MP Thangso Baite.
He was speaking at a function held at Hotel Classic here yesterday to mark Chandel ADC's completion of one year.
Of the six ADCs, Chandel ADC is peculiar in the sense that several communities live together under the Council.
He advised the ADC Members never to work in the interest of any single community.
In a State like Manipur where several committees live together, it is crucial to protect and consolidate integrity of Manipur, Thangso Baite asserted.
He strongly advocated that all ADC Members should take a firm resolution to safeguard integrity of Manipur.
If the ADC Members can take an unanimous resolution towards this end, all apprehensions about possible disintegration of Manipur would vanish.
The absence of local self government in hill districts for almost 20 years after ADC elections were held and Councils set up for two/three terms was because of certain discord and misunderstanding in the process of demanding Sixth Schedule, the MP stated.
He stated that the ADC elections were held in the State after a gap of 20 years following consistent pressure exerted by the Centre on the State Govt to set up local self government in the hill districts of Manipur.
Recalling that the ADC elections were conducted under most difficult conditions coupled with the volatile law and order situation, Thangso highlighted the duties and responsibilities of the elected ADC Members.
He exhorted the ADCs to take decisions without being influenced by any communal feelings or attachment.
He further appealed to the ADCs not to make programmes only for their own benefit but to work in the larger interest of the public.
