Kpi, April 27 2016:
Kuki Students' Organization-GHQs today condemned the recent resolutions of the Dean's Committee of Manipur University which allegedly called for a change in the reservation quota in the university and warned that it will not condone any move to alter the existing reservation policy.
Seiboi Haokip, general secretary, KSO-GHQs said that the recent resolutions of the Dean's Committee of Manipur University which called for a change in the reservation quota in the university is unacceptable while the repeated attempt by the university authority to deprive the tribals of their rightful quota does not augur well for peaceful atmosphere in the university as well as the State.
He lamented that the existing reservation policy in the university ie, SC-3%, ST-34%, and OBC-13% guaranteed as per the reservation policy of the Ministry of Personnel, Training for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes which is being fixed in Central universities other than in Delhi on the basis of the proportion in the States and UTs should be strictly adhered to.
He also said that all the Ministries/Departments of the Central Government including the Ministry of Human Resources Development under which the UGC functions relates to this policy.
Therefore, the authority of Manipur University cannot alter this reservation policy at its own and fancy and whims, he added.
Seiboi continued that Manipur University as the highest centre of learning in the State ought to have a congenial atmosphere at all times and refrain from encouraging policies detrimental to the tribals and added that the frequent and undue disturbances resulting from MU authority's prejudiced attitude is unfortunate and unbecoming.
Recalling the previous chaos in the university, Seiboi Haokip said that in the past the university was engulfed in chaos and pandemonium over the same row in reservation policy when it first became a Central university and as result the existing reservation policy is being followed till today.
He further said that the university must follow the existing reservation policy in all matters including recruitment and appointment of teaching and non-teaching staff while the resolution of Dean's Committee meeting to refer the matter of reservation in admission to the Academic Council must be abrogated at the earliest and reservation in admission of ST students in the university should be as per the existing reservation policy.
The student body also said that the Manipur University authority must think twice before enforcing the committee's resolutions to avoid any ugly incident while cautioning that it will support ATSUM and MUTSU in any form of agitation if the university authority does not abrogate the two resolutions adopted by the Dean's Committee which violate the existing reservation policy.
