Imphal, May 26 2011:
State Unit BJP has strongly condemned the detention of two BJP workers by the police after the election to the Imphal Municipal Council as well as the threat on a party candidate who contested in the election for the post of Councillor.
Addressing a press conference at the party office here today, vice president of BJP State Unit Prof S Tiken denounced the conduct of the police in arresting the two BJP workers without any valid reason and the threat for producing the party candidate as an affront to democracy.
Prof Tiken said that one Dorendro, the husband of RK Bina, who is the Congress candidate for the post of Councillor from ward no.19/9 under Yaiskul Assembly Constituency, came to the polling station at around 3 pm yesterday and threatened the polling personnel and the security personnel on duty with a gun.
On hearing the news, BJP candidate Ratikanta alias Boy rushed in along with some of his agents.
However, a group of supporters of the Congress candidate not only tried to stop Ratikanta from going inside the polling station but also tried to lay their hands on him.
This led to a clash between the two parties.
BJP is grateful for the manner in which the situation was brought under control from getting out of hands by the police.
But the arrest of two party workers, namely M Moba and Y Sumant after registering an FIR case after the election was over and the subsequent threat at the house of the party candidate is an affront to democracy and an attempt to politicise the issue, Prof Tiken said.
BJP demands that such incident should not be repeated and the arrested workers should be freed at once, Prof Tiken added.
