Imphal, June 22 2017:
KANGPOKPI, Jun 22 : National Highway 2 today is in a deplorable condition with potholes dotting the highway and making travel along this stretch of the road a nightmarish experience for everyone .
The condition of the highway, more particularly from Gamgiphai in Kangpokpi district to Senapati DHQs, is deteriorating every day specially after the recent heavy rainfall and heavy volume of traffic flow particularly of heavy trucks carrying LPGs and oil tankers .
It is extremely hard to navigate through the numerous potholes which dominate the entire road with some of the potholes big enough to keel over heavy loaded trucks .
Earlier, the people anticipated a smooth ride along the highway after the BJP led coalition Government demonstrated concern for the hill districts and more particularly when the potholes were mended twice ahead of the Chief Minister’s visit to Kangpokpi and Senapati .
However, the mending of potholes along the National Highway seems only for the Chief Minister’s smooth ride as now the highway remains unattended to .
Two wheeler riders have to face the ignominy of being splashed by the dirty water clogged on the highway whenever a heavy vehicle passes by them.
During the dry season it is dust they have to contend with .
School children also face tremendous hardship in crossing the highway owing to the slushy and muddy condition of the now deplorable NH-2 .
Considering all the grievances and hardships of all sections, the district administration of Kangpokpi wrote to the State Government on June 20 highlighting the tremendous hardships of the people while drawing the attention of Government to address the grievances of the public.
Deputy Commissioner T Ranjit Singh said that the condition of National Highway 2 is deteriorating day by day and unless repairing work is taken up and retaining walls at vulnerable sections not built, then the road will no longer be fit for movement of heavy trucks carrying important items .
Unless the pathetic state of the highway is addressed to, road accidents cannot be ruled out, rued the DC .
The IAS officer also stated that after the recent flood at Kalapahar, the condition of the bridge at Kalapahar also needs immediate attention of the engineers from NH Division .
The Deputy Commissioner, Kangpokpi has also urged the Chief Engineer, PWD (National Highway) Division to make a special arrangement for immediate repairing/filling of potholes with bitumen in the affected areas along NH-2 in the interest of the people.
