Imphal, January 21 2016:
Reiterating
its 48 hours general strike call
from midnight of January 24 to
midnight of January 26 in the
tribal areas of 'present
Manipur' , the United Naga
Council has once again
announced that the Naga people
and ther tribals will abstain
from this year's Republic Day
celebration.
Outlining the reason for
the decision to boycott Re-
public Day celebration, UNC
in a statement said that the
Centre has been indifferent to
the tribal people and taking
the role of fence sitters to the
'goonda raj' of Chief Minis-
ter O Ibobi and Deputy Chief
Minister Gaikhangam.
Going into details, the
statement said that the boy-
cott decision has been taken
to draw the political interven-
tion of the Centre against the
three 'anti-tribal' Bills and the
resolution of the State As-
sembly on August 31 and the
subsequent killing of nine ci-
vilians whose bodies are still
lying at the morgue of Civil Hospital, Churachandpur.
Other demands of the UNC include, 'to revoke and nullify
the notification/order of the Home Department, Government of
Manipur on re-organising police district boundaries.'
Hundreds of tribal villages which were carved out and
included in the 4 valley districts of Imphal should be returned
to its original districts, said UNC.
The statement also demanded withdrawal of all Manipur
police commandos and IRBs from cease fire and SoO cover-
age territories.
UNC also demanded that adequate justice be delivered to
the victims of K Somrei Naga village who were indiscrimi-
nately fired and beaten up by Manipur police commandos
posted at ABCI camp on December 27 last year during Christ-
mas festival at 7.30 pm.
Religious program, earthquake related activities, educational
institutions, medical, electricity, water supply and media will
be exempted from the purview of the general strike, added
UNC.
Nagas and tribals have also been urged to extend support
and co-operation to the proposed 48 hours general strike and
to stand unitedly until the long cherished political aspiration is
achieved.
Tribe hohos/frontal organizations/regional organisations
have also been informed to take up every appropriate steps to
ensure that the 48 hours democratic general strike is strictly implemented in their respective jurisdictions.
UNC added that anyone found violating the general strike
and boycott call shall be at his/her own risk and it will not be responsible
for any untoward consequences .
