Imphal, January 19 2016:
Thangmeiband AC MLA Khumukcham Joykishan has lambasted the State Government for flouting the notification issued by Imphal Municipal Corporation regarding providing temporary accommodation to the displaced women vendors of two Ima Keithels at the parking space located at Khwairamband temporary market.
Speaking to reporters at his Khoyathong residence, the MLA said that after Ima Keithel No 2 and 3 developed cracks in the recent earthquake, the Executive Officer of IMC issued a notification to rehabilitate maximum number of displaced women vendors at the parking space located at the northern side of Khwairamband temporary market on January 7 last.
The notification also mentioned that PWD would commence construction of the market shed from January 8, he said.
The Government however began construction of a temporary market shed at the highly congested stretch between Ima Keithel and Kasturi bridge on Thangal bazar road after one week.
As such, the Government must come up with a convincing clarification why they have changed their mind, Joykishan said.
Contending that the Government's move would affect the people of the whole of Manipur, the MLA observed that it is not an issue of Thangmeiband locals alone.
Instead of putting in efforts to ease traffic congestion, the Government is trying to create more problems by planning to set up temporary market sheds at Thangal bazar, he said.
The MLA said that it is a well known fact that roads leading towards Khoyathong and Thangmeiband from Kanglapat and Nagamapal sides are the most congested roads in Imphal.
Traffic volume on Nagamapal and Kanglapat roads would automatically increase if Thangal bazar road is closed to traffic and students would never be able to reach their schools and colleges on time, he said.
Moreover, the Government's move may result in catastrophic loss of properties and lives if disasters like fire and earthquake occur, he observed.
The Government must never forget that Thangal bazar is not only a commercial hub but also a densely populated residential area, the MLA said.
He also expressed wonder why the Congress MLAs and workers are unable to utter a single word although they know that the Government's plan is not right.
During today's bandh, he said, many TAKDO volunteers and Thangmeiband locals were injured in police action.
It is unfortunate that the Government is not willing to act positively without people's uprising, he said and added that the Government passed the three ILP Bills only after the death of Sapam Robinhood.
Maintaining that he would always stand up against the wrong policies of the Government in the interest of the people of Manipur, the MLA said that he inspected Sekmai barrage when it collapsed some time back.
Joykishan said that the Chief Minister must never go against the wish of the people as he is the elected leader of the whole of Manipur.
He also urged the Chief Minister to provide vending space at a suitable place instead of giving more woes to the public by setting up temporary market sheds at the congested Thangal bazar.
The MLA also thanked to all those who had extended support to his cause.
