Drugs worth Rs 70 Cr seized

A combined team of NAB and 18 Assam Rifles yesterday afternoon arrested one person along with 8 lakh World is Yours (W/Y) tablets and three kilogram of heroin worth Rs 70 crore in the international market from Bongyang village near Lamkhang Khunou Tengnoupal district Briefing media persons, NAB SP W Basu stated that on specific information a team of NAB conducted search operation at Kakching Lamkhai area.
During the frisking, one person coming towards Imphal from Moreh in a Mahindra Bolero with registration number MN03-P-1511 was detained for checking and verification.
On spot verification the driver was identified as Khaikholun Mate (34) s/o Jamkhojang Mate of Tengnoupal district and he disclosed that he had dumped the drugs items in a store room owned by one Shelly of Bongyang village near Lamkhang Khunou.
Subsequently 18 Assam Rifles was requested for assistance in the operation as Bongyang village falls under their jurisdiction, said the SP.
The 18 Assam Rifles troops and NAB cordoned the area and conducted search operation at the store room as indicated by Khaikholun Mate, said the SP and added that on searching the store room, nine yellowish gunny bag containing drugs 8 lakh W/Y tablets weighing around 80 kilograms and three Kilograms of heroin were seized.
After the recovery of the drugs, Khaikholun Mate was arrested and a regular case has been registered.
The accused Khaikholun Mate was today produced before the Special Court ND/PS Manipur and taken into police custody for 8 days till September 25.The SP further said that as on September at around 4.15 pm a team of NAB police station arrested one Mrs D Teresa Lamkang (29) w/o (L) K George of Sektai Karong village Chandel district from near Pallel Bridge and seized 3 kilograms of Opium along with one mobile handset.
A regular case has also registered against her under the ND&PS Act.
Regarding the disposal of seized contraband drugs items by NAB, he clarified that the process for disposal of seized drug items is a lengthy process and need approvals from the Court concerned.
He assured that the disposal of some seized drugs items will be carried out after taking due permission from the Court concerned Additional SP NAB Brinda Thounaojam stated that there was a report of store room of contraband drugs items somewhere in Tengoupal district and cops have been on the hunt to bust the store room.
She said that the drug peddler used to take a foot route before reaching the Khudengthabai check post to avoid the checking and place the consignment in the store and then on the next day they transport their consignments by foot and cross the Tengnoupal check post before uploading for transportation their consignments along the Imphal Moreh road She also stated that there is also report of illegal poppy plantation in Nambol area some 4/ 5 kilometers away from Nambol Bazar.
