MPCC observes Nirbhaya Day

Joining other parts of the country, the Nirbhaya Day was observed in the State with the Manipur Pradesh Mahila Congress Committee organising a one-day State level seminar on crime against women today at Congress Bhawan, BT Road.
The day was observed to commemorate the gangrape of Nirbhaya in Delhi and her subsequent tragic death in Singapore last year.
Speaking as the chief guest of the programme, MLA O Landhoni while admitting existence of heinous crimes like that of Dec 16 Delhi Gangrape case in the State stressed the need to counsel and sensitise their children against such crimes.
She said that parents need to keep abreast of the various activities of their wards while adding that children need to be guided in the right path in order to better the society.

Landhoni urged the parents to raise their children through honest means but not at the cost of their dignity.
As the resource person of the seminar, Ng Tejkumar Singh, Director of Prosecution, Govt of Manipur compared and contrasted the ways and means adopted by mother of yesteryears and contemporary mothers in raising their children.
He said that in olden days, mothers raised their children through honest means and produced valuable citizens.
Many crimes have occurred in this generation as a result of the springing up of many immoral youth.
He also underlined that cases of land disputes galore in Court in the past; but now cases relating to crime against women are abounding while citing cases like Ratanmala, Sheityabhama, Premila, rape cases of U-morok trader and a student of TG Hr Sec School, et al.
He also pointed out that there are over 10,000 cases pending at Family Court, Lamphel seeking divorce from spouses and fighting for the custody of children.
Ng Tejkumar attributed the root cause of crime against women to mobile and restaurant cultures and drugs.
He further underscored that women themselves also committed atrocities against their fellow women while citing cases relating to harassment of daughter-in-laws by their mother-in-laws.
He added that in some cases, some accused are given punishment in order to prevent mob justice.
General secretary of MPCC, Vidyapati Senjam; President of Manipur Pradesh Mahila Congress Committee , RK Ranisana Devi, Advocate Premlata Devi and VP of MPCC, S Achouba Singh also spoke during the function.
Achouba said that the award of punishment to the TG Hr Sec School student's rape accused showed that the State is seriously taking the issue of crime against women.
MLA D Korungthang said that only men should not be blamed for the crimes against women.
Women should not easily go along with persons whom they are not aware of their antecedents.
