The State Government today demarcated the historic Kangla ahead of the Prime Minister's visit during which the PM is scheduled to announce the handing over of the historic place to the people of Manipur during a public meeting on November 20.The demarcation work was also taken up to declare Kangla as a World Heritage Site and though the State Govt had earlier written to the Centre on this point, no response has been forthcoming as yet.
Three Government Departments, the PWD, Directorate of Settlement and Land Records and Art and Culture Department conducted the demarcation exercise of the place where the 9 Sector Assam Rifles and 17 Bn AR are stationed.
As soon as the formal handing over of Kangla to the State is announced then the State Government will take up the necessary work to develop the place as a World Heritage Site.
The demarcation exercise started at 8 am from the southern side of the Fort, at the Sanjenthong and Imphal river side.
Employees of the three departments were led by its senior officers.
Boundary pillars were erected to demarcate the land of Kangla.
The demarcation drive was also conducted from the southern side, from the direction of the Raj Bhawan and proceeded towards the northern side and after passing through the Western gate of Kangla proceeded up to the direction of the office of the PWD.
From there again the demarcation work was taken up along the eastern side towards the direction of Minuthong.
The demarcation work wound up by about 11.45 am.
Speaking to newsmen during the demarcation exercise, an officer of the Art and Culture Department said that though the State Government has already sent a proposal to the Centre to develop Kangla as a World Heritage Site, there is as yet no definite response.
