Imphal, May 13 2017:
Inspector General of police, Clay Khongsai has clarified that there were no incidents of use of threat or pressure by police department or its personnel towards activist Binalakshmi Nepram or her family.
Speaking to media persons at Imphal West District police HQs today, he said that a team of SDPO Imphal West visited Binalakshmi Nepram's residence at Sagolband Nepra Menjor Leikai yesterday to take official statement, as a part of a suo moto case taken up by Imphal police station regarding threats to Supreme Court Advocate Utsav Singh Bains by alleged militants.
He clarified that Binalaskhmi was not at home when the police team arrived and there was no incident of using threats or pressure upon the family members by the police personnel.
He pointed out that the department has clarified regarding the issue after rumours began to surface on social media websites that police harassed Binalakshmi.
Clay Khongsai said that the police took up a sou moto case on May 10 and the SDPO who is also the IO, contacted Advocate Utsav Singh Bains for taking his statement.
However, the advocate failed to turn up at the police station despite promising to come.
Yesterday, at around 10.08 am, Advocate Utsav informed the IO through SMS to meet him at the High Court of Manipur complex, after which the IO rushed to the Court complex and at around 10.52 am, he received another SMS from the advocate saying that he had already left for Delhi, the IGP added.
He pointed out that the IO had visited Binalaskhmi, one of the closest acquaintance of the Advocate in the State, yesterday after they failed to obtain his statement.
The IGP clarified that the supposed news doing the rounds in social media websites are baseless and exaggerated rumours adding that only the IO went inside to meet the family members while the remaining security personnel stayed outside.
He clarified that the SDPO also visited one Naoroibam Ratan alias Kapu from Heingang but failed to meet him in person.
