Jiribam, October 12 2011:
Movements of trucks to and fro to Imphal remain unaffected in the midst of office and market closure due to the 120 hours general strike called by the Jiribam District Demand Committee, reports our correspondent.
At least 1022 goods laden trucks left Jiribam for Imphal today under escort by IRB, police commandos and MR personnel.
The goods laden trucks include 362 truckloads of cement, 55 diesel tankers, 38 trucks of wheat, 31 LPG bullet tankers, 27 trucks of FCI rice and 18 trucks of medicines.
While Government offices, educational institutions and markets continue to remain closed, hundreds of goods laden trucks passed through Jiribam towards Imphal from Silchar and Guwahati.
Bandh supporters continue to the effigies of the Chief Minister and local MLA Th Debendra to register their protest against the failure to upgrade Jiribam to district status.
Security measures have been tightened with enhanced patrolling on the streets of Jiribam.
