Naga pact will not harm State's interest: BJP

Imphal, August 12 2015: State unit of BJP Chief Thounaojam Chaoba has reassured people of Manipur on Wednesday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not do anything to disturb the territorial integrity of the State.

Addressing the media at the party office, Nityaipak Chuthek , the BJP Manipur Pradesh President stated that the BJP-led NDA Government at the Centre will not act to let people "die" in Manipur by ceding territory of the State based on the call for Naga integration.

He reassured that Narendra Modi will not do anything to harm the interest of Manipur while sealing any peace deal with the NSCN (IM).

Modi has assured him twice that Manipur's territorial boundary will not be affected by the Naga peace accord.

Several civil society groups in the State have been criticizing the State BJP over the peace accord signed between the Government of India and NSCN (IM) on August 3 .

Chaoba said the recent Naga peace accord is just a framework and that the Prime Minister has also promised that Chief Ministers of Manipur, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh will be taken into confidence and the pros and cons of the Naga agreement will be discussed with them.

He said it has also been learned that the Centre has asked the State Government in writing to provide details on the unfavourable factors concerning territorial boundary of the State of Manipur.

Chaoba appealed to the people stay calm over the peace accord saying Manipur will not be disintegrated by the agreement.

The State BJP always wants to keep Manipur's territorial integrity intact, he reaffirmed.

The State BJP chief urged all legislators to refrain from provoking the people over the issue and mentioned the need for uniting all political parties to discuss the issue together.

A letter was submitted to Chief Minister O Ibobi by BJP on August 7 requesting him to convene an all-party meeting and discuss the Naga peace accord, he informed.

Commenting on the current ILP issue, Chaoba said his party wants the Government to introduce a practicable ILP system bill.
