Imphal, August 08, 2013:
A bailey bridge constructed over Barak river along Imphal-Jiribam highway has been closed to all kinds of vehicles after a clamp fastening the bridge snapped.
Empty trucks travelling from Imphal have been stranded near the bridge since CRPF prohibited vehicles from crossing the bridge.
Meanwhile, it is reported that the depressed portion of the highway at Sibilong is being repaired with the 70 truck loads of stones sent there by the Transporters' and Driver's Council.
Speaking to The Sangai Express CO of 765 BRTF Colonel Bhal said that they had urged the State Government not to let heavy vehicles pass through the route for two days, so that they can repair the damaged portions.
However so far no response has come from the side of the State Government, he said and again urged the Government to give them two days time to repair the road by stopping movement of heavy vehicles along the route.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has given its nod to the proposal to put up an additional bailey bridge each at Barak and Makru as back up to the existing bridges.
This arrangement will be in place till RCC bridges come up at the said two sites.
