Rijiju stresses legal awareness for NE women

New Delhi, April 07 2016:
The two day legal awareness program for women from North East States in Delhi is the right initiative and is expected of the National Women's Commission, said Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju and added that it has come at the right time.
Kiren Rijiju said this at the inaugural fucntion of the two day legal awareness program for North East women in Delhi.
"Safety of women is our priority," said the Minister and added that safety and security of women across India is a serious concern.
The Minister urged the National Women's Commission to take issue of crime against women "head on."

"While the Constitution of India gives equal rights, it is a shame that the country need separate laws for safety and security of women from North East in particular, the women of India in general" the Minister said adding that "if necessary the IPC and CRPC will be amended" but cautioned that " laws should not be misused.
"Indian laws are old now and need revisiting and amendments" said Manipur MP T Meinya while emphasizing on the need for respecting each other.
The legal awareness for women from North East living in Delhi was held in view of the escalating crime against women from the North East.
Chairperson of the Commission Lalitha Kumaramangalam admitted that there is a grievances that the North East region and its people are neglected, which is justified.
Talking of the Commission's challenges in reaching far flung areas , the Chairperson said that this legal awareness program , which is the first of its kind, has been initiated to reach out to the North Easterners residing in Delhi.
The two day event deliberated on issues of cyber crime , sexual harassment at work place, violence against women in both public and private space and other issues concerning North East women in particular and women in India in general.
