Woman dies 1 day after giving birth, bid to storm hospital foiled

Irate locals and family members of a 37 year old woman tried to storm Raj Medicity located at North AOC alleging negligence of doctors and hospital authorities led to the death of a woman a day after giving birth to her third child in normal delivery.
The incident occurred at around 1 pm today after locals and family members learnt that the woman identified as Elangbam ningol Phairembam ongbi Panthoi, wife of Phairembam Chingkheinganba @ Bungchi of Khagempali Nganapi Thong died at around 12.30 pm at Raj Medicity ICU.
The timely intervention by the police however prevented any kind of unwanted incident in the hospital area.
The deceased woman was a lady Constable of Imphal West district police and posted at Lamphel police station.

Speaking to the media near Raj Medicity, Phairembam Ching-kheinganba @ Bungchi stated that since the beginning of pregnancy of their third child, they were consulting Raj Medicity's Obstetrician and Gynaecologist Senior consultant, Dr L Surkumar from time to time till his wife got admitted for delivery and all the required tests were conducted as prescribed by the doctor.
His wife was admitted to Raj Medicity in the evening of October 4 and gave birth to a baby boy yesterday in the morning, he said.
Later he was informed that the health condition of his wife was serious and there was an urgent need to perform an operation to remove his wife's womb and subsequently the operation was conducted, he said.
It was also informed that the kidney of his wife was damaged and needed to undergo dialysis before the hospital management staff informed him that her condition deteriorated and died in the ICU, he said.
He alleged that it was due to the negligence of the doctor of Raj Medicity which led to the death of his wife as his wife was admitted in the hospital without any medical problem.
The situation outside the hospital was brought under control by a large number of police personnel who allowed few family members of the deceased to hold a talk with doctors and hospital authorities in the presence of a senior police officer of Imphal West district.
SP Imphal West, K Meghachandra also arrived at the hospital to take stock of the situation.
After holding the talk, angry locals and family members refused to claim the body and urged the doctor concerned to make a public apology in the presence of the media for his alleged wrongdoing in the case.
After a gap of some minutes, angry locals and family members left the area and went back to their locality to hold a meeting to discuss their further course of action in connection with the incident and to form a JAC.
On the other hand, Medical Superintendent of Raj Medicity, Dr Aribam Ibotombi said that the deceased was admitted to the hospital for child delivery without any kind of health problem and on October 5 she gave birth to a baby boy early in the morning.
After giving birth, the womb of the deceased got infected and due to excessive bleeding her health condition deteriorated, he continued.
Doctors of the hospital consulted with the deceased's husband and other family members for removal of her womb as the bleeding was not stopping and later an operation was done to remove her womb.
After the operation, the deceased was conscious for some minutes before her blood pressure started lowering and she was immediately admitted to ICU, he said.
The hospital staff tried all their best to save her life but unfortunately she died at around 12.30 pm today, he said.
The irate locals and family members also tried to storm the residence of the doctor concerned at Hodam Leirak later in the evening, but police yet again intervened timely and brought the situation under control.
