Imphal, February 05 2013:
Referring to Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam's statement, who is also in charge of the Home Department, that he had no knowledge about the setting up of Special Investigation Unit (SIU) as well as its subsequent abolition, one MLA on condition of anonymity has asserted that the Deputy Chief Minister was deceiving the people.
Gaikhangam had full knowledge about the establishment of SIU and its abolition, the MLA stated.
Notably, SIU OC K Ranjit successfully intercepted and seized a huge consignment of pseudoephedrine from Tulihal Airport on January 11 .
After this seizure, SIU was disbanded and OC Ranjit was transferred.
Gaikhangam was already in charge of Home Department when SIU was set up on May 6, 2012 and it was disbanded on January 12 this year.
According to the State Government's rule of business, the Minister-in-charge could not be by-passed when the SIU was set up or disbanded.
It is clearly written in Articles 12, 16, 22 (3), 26, 27, 28, 29, 31 and 33 (A), the MLA pointed out.
By claiming that he had no knowledge about the establishment and dissolution of SIU, Gaikhangam was deceiving the public, the MLA alleged.
