Imphal, January 05 2022:
Days after Supreme Court sought responses of the Centre and the Manipur Government to a petition challenging the Constitutional validity of the Inner Line Permit System (ILPS) in Manipur, the Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS) has asserted that they will meet the case squarely and fairly.
The petition was filed by Amra Bangalee, an organisation based in Kolkata.
The JCILPS also urged the State Government to reinforce the permit system to regulate the entry of non-locals into the State more effectively.
Speaking to media persons at its office, JCILPS co-convenor Warepam Second stated that every community has a right to protect its identity and way of life and demanding the same doesn't target anyone.
Saying that ILPS was implemented on January 1, 2020 after much protests by the people to protect the indigenes of the State and nothing else, Second urged all to enter Manipur after obtaining the necessary permit.
It is unfortunate that Amra Bangalee, an organisation based in Kolkata filed a petition against the implementation of ILPS to the Supreme Court, he said and added that the JCILPS will meet the case firmly.
Second then urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Minister N Biren Singh to look into the matter at the earliest.
Stating that ILPS is also implemented in some other North East States, Second warned that the JCILPS might launch a series of agitations if the Government sidelines the issue.
