9 checkings between Moreh and Imphal

Light vehicles travelling from Imphal to Moreh are checked nine times starting from Pallel and the number of checkings is doubled in the return journey, and checking often means payment of money by transporters.
The Indo-Myanmar Light Vehicle Drivers' Union was set up today with the twin objective of highlighting the woes faced by drivers and transporters along Imphal-Moreh road and also to check transportation of contraband items to and from the border town.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club this afternoon, general secretary of the newly established union, Maibam Sanjit said that light vehicles travelling to Moreh are checked nine times.
On the return journey, the vehicles are charged 'taxes' by 18 different groups.
The vehicles are checked at Pallel, Molnoi, Thamnapokpi, VDF check-post past Thamnapokpi, Saivom, Tengnoupal AR, Tengnoupal Police, Khudengthabi and Kondong Lairembi.
On the return journey from Moreh to Imphal, Moreh Customs charge money based on the types and quantity of goods loaded on the vehicles.
At Moreh, Hill Tribal Council charges Rs 30 on each and every vehicle at Kondong, every vehicle at Kondong Lairembi, Police charged Rs 20, Wireless Rs 20, CID Rs 20, ACODOM Rs 10 and an unidentified body charge Rs 50 from each and every vehicle.
Vehicles are checked thoroughly at Khudengthabi check-post and Tengnoupal check-post of Assam Rifles but no money is charged at the two check-posts.
At Tengnoupal, Tengnoupal Police charged Rs 20 from each vehicle and extra money for goods.
Wireless and CID charge Rs 25 each, and unidentified body operating just opposite to Tengnoupal Police collects Rs 100 from each vehicle.
The transporters have to pay the same amounts to same agencies based at Pallel.
At Heikakpokpi, Manipur Rifles charge Rs 20 and the vehicles are charged Rs 10 to Rs 20 by Khongjom Police, Rs 10 at Wangjing police outpost, Rs 10 to Rs 20 by VDF at Canchipur and again Rs 10 to 20 by VDF at Singjamei Chingamathak.
