Imphal, December 03 2015:
Although the State PWD has funds to repair National Highway sections which are under its care, highway repairing works have been impeded by disruptive and subversive activities, said a top-ranking official of the department.
Notably, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has already sanctioned Rs 4.23 crore and another Rs five crore for ordinary and special repairing of National Highway sections which are under its care.
Repairing work was underway at Koubru Leikha along Imphal-Mao highway when cadres of a militant group under SoO pact allegedly assaulted and drove away labourers from the work site a few days back, said the officials quoting the contractor concerned.
After negotiation with the particular group, labourers were sent back to the work site.
But they were stopped by one town commander of the outfit at Saparmeina.
Asking with whom the negotiation was made, the town commander prohibited resumption of the highway repairing work, continued the PWD official.
According to the work programme, black-topping should be done for a length of 13 Kms from Koubru Leikha towards Saparmeina but before proceeding with the black-topping work, all potholes should be filled in first.
The contract work was awarded to Rakhaua Constructions, said the PWD official while appealing to all civil society organisations to intervene against such disruptive and subversive activities.
Numerous civil society organisations of Sadar Hills have been strongly criticising the lack of maintenance on the highway.
