Imphal, April 30 2013:
Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam who is also in charge of the Home Department has admitted that lack of discipline among police personnel led to involvement of some cops in transportation of illegal drugs towards Moreh.
Speaking to some media persons on the return journey after attending a block level political workers conference at Lamlai today, Gaikhangam wondered if there were certain lapses during the recruitment procedure that police personnel got involved in smuggling drugs.
Informing that there are more than 40,000 State police personnel, the Home Minister admitted that there may be crooks or men with criminal disposition among the 40,000 police personnel.
It is not an easy task to control them, Gaikhangam conceded.
Whatever may be the reason, all the personnel involved in smuggling drugs would not be let off, Gaikhangam assured .
Earlier, Gaikhangam opened a block level political conference of MPCC at Pureilomba Lai Lampak, Lamlai at the instruction of AICC.
Addressing the conference, he emphasised the importance of keeping a close touch with the people and inform them about the programmes and policies taken up by the Government.
It was only the Congress party which stood firm for the territorial integrity of Manipur with a conviction driven by indomitable spirit of "Come what may", Gaikhangam asserted.
People have now started seeing in action the Government of India's vision of Look East Policy which would transform Manipur as the gateway to South East Asia.
What is more powerful or potent is not guns or bombs but economic warfare.
Claiming that people have faith in Congress party's vision and policies, Gaikhangam predicted that Congress will remain in power for the fourth consecutive term.
There were severe threats and disturbances from different quarters including CorCom when Congress party fought the last Assembly elections.
But people's faith in the party could not be diminished a bit by violence and guns and bombs, Gaikhangam stated.
MLA Manga Vaiphei, MLA D Korungthang, MLA T Mangi, MLA Kshetrimayum Biren and MPCC officer bearers were also present at the conference.
