Alzheimer's Day observed

Under the theme, "Dementia: Can you reduce the risk?" the World Alzheimer's Day was observed at Manipur Press Club, Imphal today.
Organized by the Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS), Manipur State Branch and Senior Citizens for Society, Manipur, the occasion was attended by Dr..LSurchandra Singh, former Director, Family Welfare, Government of Manipur, Dr..R.KKumarjit Singh, former Member Secretary, Manipur State Mental Authority, Dr..R.KLenin Singh, Professor, department of Psychiatry, RIMS Imphal, research scholars, senior citizens and doctors.
A key note address on the occasion was given by Dr..NHeramani Singh, Professor and Head, department of Psychiatry, RIMS, Imphal.
Dr..LSurchandra while speaking on the occasion said that Alzheimer's disease is a complex chronic, progressive neurodegenerative disease of the brain which destroys the brain cells causing problems with memory, thinking and behavior in people affected by it.
Further, he said that in such a scenario, caring for persons with the disease at home can be quite challenging.
Since the job of a care-giver becomes extremely difficult, it can be made easier by careful planning, implementing the coping strategies to deal with the personality changes of the person suffering from the disease.
Dr Lenin speaking on the occasion said that in Manipur, certain cases of patients suffering from Alzheimer's disease have been diagnosed at clinics but no research or findings have been conducted on how to cure the disease, nor has any awareness programme been done regarding the disease till date.
